Facebook is Suing NameCheap To Prevent Phishing Attacks on Its Users
Social media giant Facebook filed a lawsuit against the domain registrar Namecheap and its privacy protection service WhoisGuard for not co-operating with the 2-year long investigation regarding the selling of domains that impersonate Facebook brand, which could lead to phishing attacks on the Facebook users.
Christen Dubois, Director and Associate General Counsel, IP Litigation at Facebook said that their engineers were able to track down 45 suspicious Facebook-lookalike domains registered though Namecheap & WhoisGuard service.
According to the engineers, they tracked down domains such as instagrambusinesshelp.com, facebo0k-login.com, and whatsappdownload.site.
“We sent notices to Whoisguard between October 2018 and February 2020, and despite their obligation to provide information about these infringing domain names, they declined to cooperate”, Christen added in her blog post on Facebook.
While Namecheap provided a statement to ZDNet stating that, “Namecheap takes every fraud and abuse allegation extremely seriously, and diligently investigates each reported case of abuse.”
“Facebook may be willing to tread all over their customers’ privacy on their own platform, and in this case it appears they want other companies to do it for them, with their own customers. This is just another attack on privacy and due process in order to strong arm companies that have services like WhoisGuard, intended to protect millions of Internet users’ privacy.”
