Misconfigured Database of Virgin Media Exposes 900,000 Customers’ Information

Virgin Media, a telco company from UK, disclosed a data leak that was caused due to a misconfigured database that was left exposed online.

The database was one of the marketing databases of Virgin Media that contained information of more than 900,000 its customers.

In this data leak, information such as contact name, email address, phone number, house address, technical and product information and date of birth customers were exposed online.

Although, Virgin Media assured its customers that the database did NOT include any passwords or financial details, such as bank account number or credit card information.

They immediately fixed the issue by shutting down access to the exposed database.

The company said it is keeping Information Commissioner’s Office fully updated since they became aware of this incident.

Lutz Schüler, CEO of Virgin Media said:

“We are now contacting those affected to inform them of what happened. We urge people to remain cautious before clicking on an unknown link or giving any details to an unverified or unknown party. Online security advice and help on a range of topics is available on our website.
