4 Major Cellphone Carriers in US Face $200M Fine by FCC

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved a proposal and sent fine notices to 4 major cellphone carriers in US for selling customers’ location data to companies that allowed it to be misused by rogue law enforcement officers and others.

The cellphone carriers include – T-Mobile (fined more than $91 million), AT&T ($57 million), Verizon ($48 million) and Sprint ($12 million). The FCC found the carriers had violated the section of Telecommunications Act requiring them to confidentiality of customers’ call information.

T-Mobile’s fine is highest in part because it shared with over 80 entities, according to the documents. Sprint, by contrast, shared with fewer than a dozen.
